STEVEN BERKELEY MAYS

Steven Berkeley Mays, 77, passed away on June 29, 2022, at Calvary Hospital in New York City after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Danville, VA on March 2, 1945, Steven graduated from The University of Virginia.  He earned a master’s degree in English Literature from Stony Brook University.  Upon graduation, he moved to Greenwich Village in New York City, his home for the rest of his life.  He made his career as a photographer, photographing food, interiors, still lifes and portraits.

Steven loved travel, with a special fondness for Italy.  He had a passion for art, architecture and interior design.  He was an excellent cook and a generous host.  He is remembered lovingly by his friends for his Southern manners, warmth, lively and intelligent conversation and playful sense of humor.

Steven was predeceased by his spouse and partner of 53 years, Joseph Pequigney, his parents, Herbert and Virginia Mays and his sister, Joyce Mays Crawford.  He is survived by his nephew, Brandon Crawford of Roanoke, Virginia, his sister-in-law Margaret Pequigney Cashion of Jackson, Mississippi, and the nieces and nephews of Joseph Pequigney.
