Obituary of Gary Borrell

Gary, Gaz, Borrell of New York City passed on August 20, 2026. A dedicated father and husband, Gaz was known for his knowledge, wit and love of laughter.  He is survived by his cherished daughter Katherine, and sister Tracy. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Maureen.

Gary was born in Manchester England to Pauline and Charles Borrell. Gaz was a lifelong Man City fan and despite that fell for the sassy Man United fan who was the love of his life for over 35 years. After working as a trader in the UK, and then stay-at-home Dad after moving to New York, he became an analyst for the NY Federal Reserve Bank and worked there until retiring.

Even though he and his family had made a life in New York he never lost his love of Manchester. When the time was right he wanted to go back and live his proper English life, even though he had raised a truly American girl, who when the time came, wanted a puppy. Rarely denying his daughter he became a reluctant dog owner and walker. Truth be told, and despite his constant and repeated protestations for many years, he loved that “damned dog,” no matter how much he denied it. Gaz was a writer and photographer with an eye for cityscapes and the play of light and shadow. He was a voracious reader, especially science fiction and had the discipline to write his own novel about an Englishman dealing with the supernatural world and the new world of New York City all at the same time. A cinephile whose love and knowledge of old American movies led him to compile an impressive library that he loved watching again and again.

The Borrells were famous for hosting friends and family from around the world for all occasions or no occasion necessary at all. During many of these gatherings Gaz had a desire to debate anything, with anyone at any time, even if the other person didn’t know they were debating or even particularly wanted to be a part of the debate. The debate, the exchange of ideas, the passion followed by laughter was the plot he was after. Gaz said that the number one priority in life was his wife Mo and his daughter Katie. Followed only by those two were that damn dog, and what time the City game was on. He will be missed. Cheers, mate. Cheers.
