Obituary of Brian Jontow
May 21, 2026
JONTOW--Brian Lee. Brian Lee Jontow of New York City passed away on May 21, 2026, at the age of 79. He was born on August 4, 1946, in the Bronx to his proud parents, the late Lawrence and Shirley Jontow. Brian is survived by his children, Joshua Garth Jontow and Erin Lyn Jontow -- whom he loved fiercely and unconditionally, and by Sandra Arnold, his loving partner of more than 20 years. He was the beloved older brother of Kenneth Jontow and Carol Masio, and the late Richard Jontow; brother-in-law to Jane Jontow and John Masio, all of whom felt comforted by his magical and gentle nature. Brian was a devoted father and brother, and a proud grandfather to Jonas and Harper Jontow, always looking forward to trips out west to spend time with them. He was a cherished father-in-law to Diane Jontow and Matthew Heller, whom he welcomed as family from the very beginning, and he extended that same love to Matthew's children, Akiva and Saskia. During the 20 loving years he shared with Sandy, her family became his own. He built close and meaningful relationships with her children -- Michael and Ronnie Arnold, and Leslie and Michael Sobel -- and, as their families grew, he delighted in becoming "Grandpa" to Talia and Jack, and Emily and Blake. Alongside his deep love for family was his affection for "man's best friend." Brian shared his life with many dogs over the years - snuggling with Katie, throwing sticks for Rangeley and Rooster, playing tug with Hoyt, contemplating Beaker, and somehow always finding a way to produce a piece of steak for Humphrey, Rainbow, and Enzo. While family was the center of his world, Brian also enjoyed golf, was a devoted fan of The Band, and appreciated a good glass of wine. He spent nearly five decades running some of New York City's most iconic steakhouses. If you've ever enjoyed a steak dinner in the city, chances are Brian had a hand in your experience -- often stopping by tables with his easy smile and genuine warmth. Brian will be remembered for his open heart, generous spirit, and the way he made everyone feel welcome. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was the best. A celebration of Brian's life will be held this summer. If you would like to honor Brian, please donate to the cause of your choice.
