Obituary of Moira Sheehan

January 3, 2026

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ms. Moira Sheehan.

Born in Lambeth, England, she graduated from Pitman College, London. She moved to the United States in 1963 and worked in administration for the Jewish Braille Institute of America, Coudert Brothers, Lane and Mittendorf, Rogers and Wells, Townley and Updike and Metro-North Railroad. Moira worked in many departments over the past 25 years in Metro-North, but her last department was Procurement and Materials Management, from which she retired in August 2024.

She loved traveling, horseback riding and won several riding awards, loved reading, going to the NY Public Library, and was fluent in French.

She is pre-deceased by her brother Gerald Sheehan, Sister Marie, and Sister Pauline. She is survived by her brother-in-law Ken, Sister-in-law Jackie Sheehan, nieces and nephews Ian Abbott, Catherine Taylor, Sarah and Paul Sheehan, and grand-niece Rebecca Taylor.

She had a long, well-lived life and is now reunited in heaven with her family. Rest in peace Moira.

I will miss my aunt, as she would often break the rules of societal norms. I have memories of her in the John Lewis department store blithely causing chaos with all the security devices on clothes whilst everyone panicked, and the story of her chasing a fellow who barged past her on an escalator so she could overtake him, trip him up and prod him with her umbrella with a "that'll teach you my good man" before walking off makes me smile and always crosses my mind when I have to navigate the chaos of the London Underground. She introduced me to horse riding at University, something that I tried and repeatedly failed at, and she always showed great interest in my life as it moved along. I did not see her regularly due to being in the USA from long before I was born, with only her occasional trips to the UK, and I unfortunately never got to go to NYC and visit. However I am glad that she lived quite a varied life, and a long one. She is now reunited with her family. Rest in peace. Ian x

I knew Eileen (as she was known to me and other members of the family and friends) for many years through my friendship and then marriage to Eileen's sister Marie. From time to time we both saw and enjoyed time with Eileen when she was in the UK. Also she was always with us when we were in NY either just passing through or on holiday there. Eileen was always very helpful when she was with us which always very helpful for us. I was saddened when the news came through to me in 2023 that her health was going downhill. Our only communication channel open to us in the UK was via the telephone which somewhat limited our communication with Eileen. From all of the Sheehan family and Eileen's many close friends we communicate as such: We send our love to you Moira and thank you for your time that you spent with us over many years. RIP Moira (nee Eileen) Sheehan
