Obituary of Claire Mary Moise

Claire Mary Moise passed away from natural causes on January 22, 2025, at age 77. Born June 5, 1947 to Edwin Moise and Mary Moise, she is survived by her brother Edwin Moise, her nephew Andrew Moise, nieces Toni Wander (Joseph) and Jean Zerby, and grandnieces Elise Wander-Grifka (Misha) and Michelle Wander Vogel (Nick). She will be deeply missed by her family who will forever cherish the memories they shared and impact she had on their lives.
Claire graduated with a B.A. from Radcliffe College (Harvard University) in 1969, then from Northeastern University Law School in 1975. After a brief period at a public interest law firm in Washington, DC, she went to work for the City of New York, where she quickly shifted from legal work to administration. Throughout her many years in city government she worked for several agencies involved with social services, homelessness and health issues as well as for the Mayor’s Office of Contracts. She left city government and worked for several non-profits, including the American Red Cross, and returned to city government again, before retirement in 2009.
Claire enjoyed living in Chelsea, New York, going to the ballet, symphony, and other cultural events. She was an avid crafter, spinning her own yarn and knitting and crocheting beautiful items, which she gave generously to friends and family. She played the recorder, and had a recorder for each voice (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass). She read 19th century English poetry, even going to England for conferences on Wordsworth and other poets of the Lake District. She enjoyed writing and wrote several mysteries based in the Caribbean and published a novel, Adele Grace and Celine: The Other Women of Jane Eyre, tracing the lives of three minor characters from Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. She had a special connection to Cayman Brac where she enjoyed relaxing, swimming and snorkeling for many years.
Services will be held at Crestwood Funeral Home, 445 W. 43rd Street, New York, NY, 10036 on May 17, 2025 at 10:00am.
