Obituary of Redencion “Eden” Licardo

August 28, 2024

Redencion “Eden” Licardo was born on November 26, 1937, in Manila, Philippines and died on August 28, 2024, in New York City at the age of 86. Growing up in Bulacan, Philippines, Eden attended Florentino Torres High School and graduated from the Philippines College of Commerce in Manila. For many years she worked at Quirino Memorial Hospital, where she met Numer and was a beloved friend and colleague to many, attending the births of many of her nieces and nephews. On May 12, 1962, she married the love of her life, Numeriano (“Numer”) Licardo. They lived in Quezon City, Philippines, and welcomed their son and only child, Daniel, into the world in 1963.

In February 1971, she and Numer moved to the United States, settling in the Cypress Hills neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, where they continued raising their son, Daniel, and were members of Andrews United Methodist Church. Eden and Numer moved to Flushing, Queens in 1981. They were happily married for 34 years, until Numer died in 1996.

For many years, Eden worked as an administrative assistant for the Climate Impacts Research Group at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies at Columbia University, supporting researchers, faculty members, and graduate students. Her sunny outlook and sense of humor endeared her to many, who came to value her as a colleague and friend.

Eden loved to read biographies, played a serious Scrabble game, and was always up for mahjong. She loved Tom Jones, Elvis Presley, Julio Iglesias, Tony Bennett, and Frank Sinatra. She never missed a chance to spend time with her family and friends, and those moments were the highlight of her life. With her contagious laugh and generous spirit, Eden was the life of the party and would stay up until the wee hours, relishing the company of her relatives and friends. Ever ready for fun and adventure, Eden happily joined in many late night impromptu trips to the casino; the slot machines were her favorite. Since 2003, Eden lived at the Biltmore on West 47th Street. She loved hosting friends and relatives visiting New York and nearby Times Square. She knew every doorman and porter by name, brought them coffee and Filipino food on cold nights to provide sustenance for long shifts, and was beloved by
many neighbors.

Eden was predeceased by her parents, Rosario Santos Venturina and Felizardo Venturina. She was a beloved sister to Resurreccion (“Cion/Resie”) Santos Venturina, Fortunato (“Amang/Tony”) Santos Venturina, Rosalinda (“Linda”) Santos Venturina, Fernando (“Nanding“) Santos Venturina, Felicito (“Chito/Cito/Lito”) Santos Venturina, and Felizardo (“Junior”) Santos Venturina, all of whom predeceased her. Eden leaves behind a son, Daniel Licardo, and a daughter-in-law, Gwen Licardo, of Manhattan, and is survived by her grandchildren, Miranda and Corinne Licardo, who were the delight and light of her life. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Lucy Siy and Lita Licardo, brother-in-law Luther Licardo in California, many nieces and nephews, and their children from around the world, and leaves behind many friends, who will profoundly miss her.

Memories of Eden Eden Licardo worked in the Climate Impacts Research Group at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and Columbia Center for Climate Systems Research for many years. She was the “heart” of the Group, always helping everyone in her quiet and unassuming way. She then worked for me as a Personal Assistant, again for many years. For me personally, she was a true support and friend. For example, she helped me get ready for countless trips as I built my career and then organized and submitted my expenses when I got back – An example of the many pesky tasks that she so cheerfully did. Not only did she help me keep my finances organized, she did the same for my Mother, who lived to be 101. She became a wonderful member of my Mother’s Care Team, visiting her weekly. She had a wonderful sense of humor and made sure I didn’t take myself too seriously. At GISS, Eden forged a strong friendship with Dr. Daniel Hillel, an eminent scientist. Dr Hillel often said that Eden was one of the Lamed Vovniks, the 36 unknown angels of Jewish legend without whom the world would not exist. Here is a description: “The Jewish legend of the Lamed Vovniks describes thirty-six righteous men and women in every generation upon whose merit the world is kept from entire destruction. Based in part on the story of Abraham and his conversation with the Lord about the destruction of Sodom in Genesis 18, the Lamed Vovniks are those who, by virtue of their compassion for others and the prayers they offer, cause the Lord to answer, I will spare all the place for their sakes.’ (Genesis 18:26). Most versions of this legend declare that the hidden thirty-six are unknown to the world and cannot be known, to others or to themselves. They are humble servants of their fellows, tirelessly working to dry tears, show compassion, and shoulder the burdens of those who suffer. . . The Lamed Vovniks are not powerless in this wicked world. Rather, they use the gifts and talents which they possess to lift all those around them. They help to save us all.’’ https://naokoyogitakiguchi.medium.com/angel-numbers-and-the-lamed-vovniks-the-jewish-legend-of-the-36-just-men-197d5ed97af2 Eden – Thank you for being an Angel in our lives. We send you to heaven with infinite gratitude and love. Cynthia

I will always remember the day my family arrived in NYC. We got off the plane and Tita Eden gave me the biggest hug and escorted me outside quickly for me to touch snow for the first time. I was 8 years old and thought of her, at that moment, as the kindest relative I've ever met, and I was right. I love you tita, I will miss you forever.

I was shocked to hear of Eden's passing. She was one of the loveliest and most thoughtful people I ever met. She was a caring and true friend. I loved talking to her and was so happy when we would take time to catch up and chat. My condolences to her family. She talked about all of you with so much love and affection. Eden, I will miss you terribly. Thank you for being my friend.
