Obituary of Timothy McCarthy Barrett

February 20, 2024

Timothy McCarthy Barrett passed away on February 20, 2024 in New York City, New York. He is survived by his sister Lillian Conlan. Tim was predeceased by his parents, Harry H and Lillian M. Barrett and brother James HX Barrett. Tim is also survived by nephews Michael and Steven Conlan, and Jacob and Evan Barrett, grand-nieces Park Conlan and Salem Barrett, and grand-nephews Quillan and Tucker Conlan, and many loving friends.

Tim was born and raised in Norwalk, Ct. and attended Fairfield Prep.

His passion for theatre and the arts took him to Fordham University at Lincoln Center where he graduated with a BA in Theatre in 1980. While there, he made lasting impressions on his instructors and classmates with powerful performances in work from both classical and modern canon. After college he joined the Classic Stage Company and enjoyed successes on many New York and regional stages. He worked in film and television, including Mayflower: The Pilgrims' Adventure with Anthony Hopkins.

While continuing to perform in various workshops, readings, and short films, Tim's career evolved from commanding the stage door of the Music Box Theatre on Broadway, a position he held for nearly 40 years, equally loved by the biggest stars and everyone on the crews of countless productions. He was also a beloved neighbor to all residents of the Whitby on W. 45th St., where he lived since the 1980s. Tim was an extremely affable, lovably gruff and wonderfully idiosyncratic gem of a human being, and his friends and family will miss him for all the ways he made our lives richer and a lot more fun. He was truly one of a kind, and we won't see another like him. A light has gone out in midtown Manhattan.
