I knew Doreen my entire life. She was friends with my older sister, Evelyn. Memories of Doreen are filled with laughter, good food and singing. Doreen would visit us at our house on Prospect Avenue, just a few doors down from her childhood home. We would spend time in the yard pretending we were in the movie Annie. She played Annie, (since she had the best voice), and I was the young orphan. I remember using a big laundry cart (similar to the one in the movie). Lol . We would reenact the scene and I loved it. She was robust, full of life and strength. Doreen loved my family and we all loved her. Everyone in my family knew her and she was part of the family. I will cherish those memories of her and pray that all her loved ones find strength during this time of sadness. Doreen was a beautiful person and I am thankful to have been a part of her life.

I remember Doreen, my baby sister being the flower girl in my wedding. She was only 6 and she was a handful.

I only had the pleasure of meeting Doreen a handful of times, but every single time she was as welcoming to me as if I were family. I had met her through her child, Inez, who is a dear friend of mine, and I was blessed to have been in Doreen’s presence. She was so vibrant and her smile was like a warm hug. Her hugs were strong but not in a crushing way, but like in a “I got you” way. She never failed to keep me fed and feeling comfortable. She was a wonderful hostess but not only that, she was a wonderful person from the few days I had gotten to be around her. Hearing all the stories from Inez and how their mom was so cool and amazing really was the honest truth. I remember she set up their Christmas tree to be Halloween themed! I think it was that moment that I knew not only was she a great and hospitable person but she would just get me without me having to try so hard. I think it was Doreen’s many cool, fun, and unique influences that made Inez, TJ, and Nat some of the sweetest and coolest kids/people I know! Doreen really made me feel like I was in a home away from home the few times I had been over to their home. Her warmth was felt everywhere, her cooking was unmatched, and her personality shone so brightly. I know these words are only capturing just a few moments I had the honor of sharing with her but I know with the kind of person she was, her memory will live on infinitely through her kids and all those she touched. I miss you and am sending you a Kat hug from afar.
