Lucille Massey Waring Young

February 11th 1939 – September 15th 2022

Daughter, friend, wife, mother,

So many ways to be a person, yet Lucy was consistently courageous, adventurous, creative and sensitive.

Lucy Waring was born in Panama as the first daughter of Lucille and Admiral Forsyth Massey. She had the ocean in her veins. She lived in coastal cities across the US, in Naples, Italy, and on islands throughout Asia: Singapore, Philippines, Hong Kong and Indonesia. The British Isles were a large part of her life, and she ended it, in Manhattan, the great coastal city of the Eastern United States.

Lucy had four children: Amy, Sara, Liba and Claudia, with her first husband, March Chase Waring. He passed away at age 49 but they lived an extraordinary life together in London, New York and eighteen years in Asia.

Lucy’s greatest passion besides her family and friends was her art. She was always pushing her boundaries into new unexplored territory and returning with beauty and originality. She showed in various galleries around the world and took orders from collectors for portraits.

After the death of her beloved first husband, Lucy married Hugo Young, an award-winning and acclaimed journalist and writer. They lived together for twenty years in London. This second half of her adult life might have been on only one island, but it was just as exciting and interesting and influenced her work and ideas. During this time, she exhibited her artwork at Notting Hill Gallery and held a solo at the Barbican Center in London.

After her second husband’s death, Lucy returned to Manhattan to be close to family and good friends. She passed away peacefully in her home at sunrise on Thursday, September 15th 2022. Along with her four children, Lucy leaves behind ten grandchildren, all of whom she adored.

Lucy has requested that half of her ashes be reunited with her first husband, Chase, in the Atlantic Ocean. The other half will be scattered in the Thames River to reunite with her second husband, Hugo Young.

Details for a spring 2023 memorial service will be shared at a later date.

Some of our happiest memories go back to our mutual sojourns in Singapore in the late 1960s, followed by many joint family holidays in Italy: playing board games and kids burying a dead snake, in a rented house near Volterra; and in France: Amy and Liba in their broad red and white striped pant suits on the Ile de Ré. Later: we remember staying at the Vermont house. Then, extra-ordinarily, we found ourselves living in a flat in the same London house as Lucy and meeting the hugely-admired Hugo. She always kept us fully up-to-date about her girls and grand-children and we really enjoyed Liba's wedding in France. We also admired Lucy hugely for her joy of life, her creativity and her love. Our sorrow is that Covid prevented us from a planned reunion in New York in 2019. All Pellews are sad that she is no longer with us but are at least happy to be vividly reminded of those happy times. Please keep us informed about the memorial in the Spring: we'd like to try and make it in person.

The last time I saw Lucy was in the autumn of 2019. She knew my wife Christa was seriously ill and came specially to see her, knowing it would be the last time. Lucy must have known that she herself was ill, but she made no mention of it - she did not want to trouble me with extra sorrow. Shortly after Christa died, Lucy underwent her surgery with calm courage. I shall never forget her concern for me at a time when she herself was facing an illness she knew might be fatal.
