Obituary of Roger Warren Schoening

Roger W. Schoening, 92, died on Saturday, June 5th in New York. He was born in 1928 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He studied History and Studio Art at St. Olaf College. After his graduation in 1950, he was drafted into the army where he spent two years in a heavy mortar company in Korea. After the war, he attended Parson's School of Design and upon graduation began work as Assistant to the Art Director of Charm magazine. He spent the next 35 years with Condé Nast Publications, as Art Director of Mademoiselle magazine, Art Director of Vogue magazine for 14 years, and finally as Corporate Art Director. He was fortunate enough to work for and with some of the legends in magazine publishing. He referred to his time there as a wonderful 35 years.
He met his wife Carol A. Schoening, née Erickson, originally from Michigan, in New York. They were married for 55 years and lived in Greenwich Village, where they raised their two children, with much time also spent on their home on Fire Island and cottage on Pine Lake in Wisconsin.
He is survived by his son Roger J. Schoening, daughter Julie Schoening, son-in-law Christopher Ball, brother Herbert, and twin brother Norman. He was pre-deceased by his wife Carol, granddaughter Sina Schoening Ball, and sister Marjorie Bryan.
He will be dearly missed.
