Obituary of Mr. Edward Goodwin Thomson

Edward Goodwin Thomson, 86, died on December 22, 2019, at home. He was born in New York City on November 28, 1933, and was the son of the late Joseph Carl Thomson and Dorothy Bristol Thomson. His parents and his sisters, Joan T. Balkenberg and Jane T. MacColl, and his oldest child, Richard Warren Thomson, preceded him in death.

Mr. Thomson graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont and from Cornell Law School in Ithaca, NY. He worked primarily as general counsel for corporate philanthropy with the Council on Foundations and The Foundation Center.

He was a member of Church of the Covenant, Presbyterian USA, and he served for many years as a volunteer for the National Alliance on Mental Illness in New York City.

He is survived by three of his four children, Karen Thomson Ellenberg (George) of Pensacola, FL, Lauren Thomson Page (David) of Durham, NC, and Scott Douglas Thomson (Beth) of New York, NY, six grandsons, Charles, Jonathan, and Scott Page, Bolton, Easton, and Henry Ellenberg, and granddaughter Madison Thomson. He is also survived by his companion of many years, June Downey.

The memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2020, at Crestwood Funeral Home, 445 W. 43rd St, New York, 10035, with the Rev. Dr. Cornell Edmonds officiating. The visitation is scheduled for 4:00pm followed by the service at 4:30pm.
