Obituary of Gloria Merell Haigler

October 9, 2020

Gloria Merell Haigler was born on April 26, 1941 in Cameron, South Carolina, the seventh of eleven children (two died infancy) born to George Haigler, Sr. and Bertha Zimmerman Haigler. She was baptized and grew up in Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Orangeburg, South Carolina and graduated from Orangeburg Wilkinson High School. As a young woman, she moved to New York City and worked a series of jobs before being hired at the phone company as a telephone operator. She worked at Verizon for thirty years. She married James Williams on November 27, 1982.
Gloria had an outgoing personality and an infectious laugh. She loved her family and friends with all of her heart and was a warm and very generous person. But, she was a "straight shooter." What you saw was what you got. Sometimes her words were unfiltered but she never hurt anyone who did not approach her in a disrespectful manner. Those who really knew her, understood and loved her for that.
She was a homebody at heart. She loved watching game shows, soap operas, cooking shows, playing solitaire and doing crossword puzzles. As long as she had her TV, coffee and cigarettes, she was good.
She died on October 9, 2020 in New York City after a long illness.
Siblings who preceded her in death: Alma Haigler Stroman, Reverend George Haigler, Jr., David Lee Haigler, Gladys Haigler Smith and James Haigler, all of New York City.
She leaves to mourn: her son, Darryl Haigler (Bronx, New York), daughter, Yolanda Weaver (Staten Island, New York), Son-in-law, Solomon Weaver (Staten Island, New York), Grandson, Christopher Weaver (Brooklyn, New York), Granddaughter, Chantel Haigler (Bronx, New York), Granddaughter, Alicia Weaver (Staten Island, New York), Sister, Rosa Smith (Freeport, New York), Sister, Margaret Watson (Brooklyn, New York), Sister, Cora Flanders (Brooklyn, New York), Former Husband, James Williams (Bronx, New York) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. She will be terribly missed by all.
