Obituary of Alan Melowsky

Alan Melowsky

November 4, 1942-August 10, 2024

Alan Melowsky was born in Queens to parents Esther and Charles Melowsky. He lived a vibrant life making wonderful friends and striking up conversations everywhere he went, especially at the beach. After becoming a social worker, he worked in the US Public Health Service in Alaska during the Vietnam war, then returned to New York City to earn his doctorate and meet his wife, Ellie. He worked for many years as a psychologist and completed his psychoanalytic training while starting a family. He adopted his daughter, Julie, and was a loving and devoted father who prided himself in teaching her to body surf in the ocean, travel the world, drive her to school or anywhere else she wanted to go, and earn her own degree as a psychologist, following in the family business.

Alan loved nothing more than food. He spent countless hours exploring New York City to find the “best” pizza, burgers, hot dogs, bagels… name it, and he would share his opinion of the best place to find any delicious snack or restaurant. He also enjoyed playing and watching tennis with his friends, along with watching and betting on football and basketball. He read the New York Times every day (just like his father), and traveled the world to find the best beaches and the body surfing waves. He enjoyed his spare time visiting his vacation home in East Hampton at all times of the year, and made connections with even more friends there.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Schuker, and daughter, Julie (Sam) Griffin, as well as his brother, Fred (Susan) Melowsky, grandson (Aiden), nieces, and several cousins.
